Tri-Palms Winter League Bowlers

Margriet Wilkinson - 760-343-5550 / Jean Chase - 760-343-1813 / Ogden Green - 760-534-2266

April 2011

This article was written on March 10th. We have played our last league game - the position round. There were four teams entering who had the potential to come out on top. This meant no one had an easy day of it, with players battling it out till the last pin dropped. Unofficially, Shadow Mountain took first place, with 44 points, Who Cares took second with 42, and there is a tie for third, with The Bowling Stones and the Rollers having 41 each. Total pins will determine this place. The Hot Shots were only behind by ½ a point! The awards dinner will be held on Wednesday, March 23, and so official results will not be published until the May Spectrum. Awards given will include individual and team achievements.

The league has one last day of bowling, that being a fun sweeper. In this format everyone plays for themselves, with prizes being awarded for both the top three females and males in each of the three games. This is handicapped, so anyone can come out with some extra cash.

Speaking of cash, some people have won some nice pocket change by betting on their own individual games throughout the sea-son. I have heard Bobby call the following names more than once: Art Abeyta, Rusty Maas, John Good, Bob Sherman, Ron Konkin and Ken Palmer. I apologize to those I may have forgotten.

What is it with sports and birds? In bowling we have turkeys and buzzards, and in golf birdies and eagles! (This is the pondering of a snow bird)

March 2011

It is February 9, and we have 3 regular league days, a positions day and a fun sweeper left to wrap up the season. The points won column is very tight, with only a point separating each team from the one below it. Makes things interesting till the end!

Glancing over the stats sheet some mentionable highlights have to include Ken Palmer with a high game single of 254 and holding up her end for the women, Joan O‘Berry with a 225. Also, congratulations to two new comers: Sylvia Kane has a 677 for high series handicap, and Ronelle Beardslee joined the over 200 club with a 208. (As part of a 4th Century German religious ceremony used to include bowling – those who could knock down the pins were said to be of good character, and those who missed had to do penance - can we infer the character of these high rollers?)

I was asked to post some basic bowling etiquette, both for new bowlers and as a reminder for the veterans: Remain behind your fellow bowler while he/she is bowling. (Keep off the lane!) If two people enter neighboring lanes at the same time, the bowler to the right goes first.

On the lighter side:

Bob wanted to start bowling, so his friend Fred decided to teach him. First, he says, you have to line your feet up with the center pin. Next, roll the ball down and try to knock as many pins as you can, but do not knock them all down or they cheat you out of your second ball. (I knew I missed all those spares for a reason!)

P.S. Did you know that a ball is declared dead when it hits the gutter? And if it jumps back onto the lane and knocks down pins, they don‘t count.

February 2011

It is Jan. 10, and the league has bowled 8 times. So far first place has been firmly held by the Rollers, whipped on by Margriet Wilkinson. The other 15 teams jockey back and forth from week to week in the point standings. With ten more weeks of bowl-ing the final outcome will be anyone‘s guess.

The league still needs substitutes and a full time bowler. If you are interested in this, contact any of the above officials. You would find yourself in good company, as the league is a great place to meet new people. You would also be participating in one of the oldest sports on record, one that has amused and challenged humans since 3200 BC. The game is roughly 90% derived from ancient Egypt , and 10% derived from 19th century law dodgers, the game being a favorite sport of the underworld community which attracted gamblers to it. It was at this time that the game evolved from 9 pin to 10 pin, as the 9 pin bowling alleys were outlawed!

Usually bowlers remember games because of personal records – for example Lyle Jorgenson will reflect back on his recent breaking of 200. Sometimes other things make the event memorable: George Rigden will remember Jan. 5 because he scooped an autograph from Martin Short, who was having lunch in the bowling alley on that day. Congratulations to both these guys.

P.S. A big THANK YOU to Bert Suppi and Ken Palmer for inviting the whole league to their annual brunch held in December. Wonderful hospitality, great food!

January 2011

Our league got rolling on November 10 at Fantasy Springs Lanes. We were pleased to see the number of teams increased to 16 from the 14 of last year, with many of the new bowlers participating who have not bowled for years. Welcome to the newcomers, and welcome back to those returning for another season!

Our league is for men and women over 55 who want to come out and bowl and above all, HAVE FUN. There is friendly competitiveness without the high pressure found in some other leagues. All of our members are encouraging and helpful, making the afternoon an enjoyable experience for high and low rollers alike. There are friendly side bets going on, a dollar here, 25 cents there, and you frequently will hear things like “dinner at L.G.’s if you make that one.”

Besides the bowling, members often come early for lunch, and a few slip next door to donate some money to …. a good cause? All in all, for the $13.00 a day to bowl three games you get very good value for your dollar, and some exercise to boot. Don’t kid yourself that bowling isn’t exercise – the lifting, bending, rolling involved will use muscles you forgot you had, and balance and hand eye coordination come into play too.

We still need more substitutes – subs must join or be a member of the USBC, and pay $5.00 each time they sub. Contact any of the above if you are interested in participating. Come out and try it – you might find you want to enter a team next season!

On a more personal note, congratulations to Bob Sherman who bowled his first ever 600 series on our first day out!
