April 2011

We just completed a great DERBY DAY weekend with 160 getting bused to SANTA ANITA where we had great weather, great food and a great day of betting the real ponies! That was followed up the next day with our 4th SSGC DERBY DAY. The team of DIRK JOHNSTON and GLEN CHIDESTER took the team of AL LORIA and MICHAEL BURKE to 11 holes before their horse, SILVER BULLET DAY galloped off with the victory, with MOSY jumping the rail and hitting a tree. The shot of the day was Dirk‘s putt, a 35 foot downhill that broke toward Phoenix and then back to the Morongo Casino on Hole #9 that he needed to make to tie for first place. For Dirk, it was a no brainer! And in front of 90 amazed spectators.

We are waiting for the results of our PRESIDENT‘s CUP match play between RICHARD GARNER and ERNIE DAHLQUIST, both playing for their ‗first major.‖ They are practicing a lot and hope to get the match in before Memorial Day!

In March we had the SCHROTT IV on the par 3 course and the SCHROTT V is scheduled for Sunday, April 3rd with a pot luck picnic and we will celebrate FRANK SCHROTT‘s 102nd birthday. Also in April we have on the 7th the THREE BALL FENCE JUMPER TOURNAMENT. Should be better then the YELLOW BALL so you Canadians bring at least a six foot ladder!

Finally, we will close the season and give BONKER his life back with the MASTERS. This is a two day event where we get to play with one of the PGA pros making the Master‘s cut for the weekend. The only problem is that they are in Augusta and we are in Thousand Palms, but we will be playing for a club record $2,000 in BONKY BUCKS!

The Bonker pulled the rabbit out of the hat again! If you missed the Club Championship/Casino Night, you missed a great evening of fun and frolic. Lucky JIM DAVIS & GERRY MARSDEN won trips to Vegas and a lot of others also won some great prizes too. And, congratulations to DIRK JOHNSTON (his second Club Championship in 4 years) and LORNE HAAKONSON (his first Major!) as they will be representing the club this December at the Southern California Golf Association‘s Tournament of Club Champions.

RICHARD GARNER is having a Caddy Shack year. Rich has won the BOB MARSHALL MEMO-RIAL MEMBERS CUP, has won his Flight in the PRESIDENT‘S CUP, nailed the $100 Attendance Prize at the February meeting, is the current leader in the BOB MONZINGO MONEY LEADER BOARD and Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton personally called him up for a date which he declined so he could play some more golf! A real man‘s man!

It is March and that means one thing, DERBY DAY! Yup, time to saddle up a team and try to qualify for the big event which runs on Saturday, March 12th, nine grueling furlongs with your friends and neighbors cheering and booing you on to the finish line. The festivities actually begin on Friday, the 11th when three bus loads of wild and crazy people head out for the PRE DERBY DAY PARTY at SANTA ANITA! It is sold out, but, you can still attend the POST DERBY DAY PARTY at the Bonker‘s house immediately following the race where the winning horse will take a victory lap on the dirt track at Hole #15!

Then we cap off the month with our rematch (can you spell grudge match?) with the Tri-Palms Men‘s Golf Club for the Doc McGroarty Trophy! Bring it on Tri-Palms!

February 2011

The big event in February is our Club Championship on the 10th and 11th, Thursday and Friday. Friday we will top off the event with our Club Championship Casino Night. The event runs for four hours from 4:30 to 8:30 pm and will feature a Las Vegas style theme complete with blackjack, roulette, craps and a wheel of fortune. For the non-golfer, the admission price of $17 includes a buffet, a packet of play money and a chance to win over $1,000 in prize funds including a 3 day, 2 night trip to Las Vegas! EVERYONE IS INVITED, members and non-members, so bring your friends! FRANK SCHROTT will be giving free crap lessons to the ladies! IAN CORLETT will be teaching a class in penny pinching Loonies and TONY WEBB will be doing his ELVIS impersonation! Don‘t miss this fun event!

Another great event planned for the month is the SCHNOTT III on Sunday, February 27th on the PAR 3 course. This popular event is open to club members and their friends. We tee off at 10 am and everyone, guys and gals, has a chance of winning cash for the closest to the pin on all 18 holes. Following the event, we have a great pot luck brunch.

Finally, the $5 Monday afternoon Nine Hole for Nine Weeks event starts on February 14th at 2 pm. As the name suggest, we play a 9 hole net skins game which runs every Monday for 9 weeks straight. You can get into this event for $5 by signing up with the pros in the Pro Shop.

See you on the course! And don‘t forget to attend our club meeting on Wednesday, February 9th at the club house where you will have a shot at winning the $100 Attendance Prize.


January 2011

Elected to serve on the Board next year were: GARY QUICKSTAD, President, SKIP JOHNSTON, Vice-President, JULES MEAD, Treasurer, MATT MESSIER, Handicap Chairman, JOHN BONK, Tournament Director, BILL VAUGHN, Secretary & LEE VAUGHAN, Rules Chairman.

Congratulations are in store for RAY EASON and GERRY MARSDEN for capturing our 4th annual CHAPMAN Tournament. Read all the gory details in our club newsletter, The 19th Hole.

This month, golf events swing into full gear. It is not too late to sign up for the BOB MARSHALL MEMORIAL MEMBERS CUP, the NORTH vs SOUTH Ryder Cup and the THOUSAND PALM OPEN QUALIFIERS. Our prestigious PRESIDENT’s CUP (match play) probably is full, but check in anyway as we are trying to fill a fourth bracket and need 16 players. Get more information by attending our January meeting, Wednesday, January 5th.

KEN CIACCIO would have won $100 for the Attendance Prize at last month’s meeting, but was somewhere else. Prize jumps up now to $125. And, BOB MONZINGO became the lucky winner of two round trip tickets to the club’s PRE-DERBY DAY PARTY at SANTA ANITA on March 11th.
